FMG interns intensify stir for stipend parity

The emergence of CCTV footage has added a fresh dimension to the case

Hyderabad: Medical associations condemned the detention and alleged manhandling of foreign medical graduate (FMG) interns during a protest at the health department campus in Koti on Friday and demanded an inquiry into the police action.

The FMGs have been demanding that their monthly stipend be increased from Rs 5,000 to Rs 29,792, on a par with that of Indian Medical Graduates (IMGs). On Friday, around 80 FMG interns gathered near the Telangana Medical Council, outside the directorate of medical education (DME). Despite 30 days of continuous protest, we have received no concrete assurance or resolution from the govt.

They said the demand was in accordance with the NMC public notice and relevant Supreme Court directions. Regarding detention, he alleged that police personnel resorted to force shortly after health minister Damodar Rajanarsimha arrived at the DME office for a meeting. “Several interns were allegedly assaulted and detained, with police taking them to Dabirpura and Afzalgunj police stations. Even newly qualified FMGs, whose internships have not yet commenced, joined us to extend their support. Instead, protesting doctors are facing force and detention,” he added.
