The directive came after the minister tasted the food himself. He also instructed the hospital authorities to step up cleanliness in the wards and across the campus after noticing overgrown vegetation. During the surprise visit to the maternity ward of the Belgachhia facility, Mukherjee went inside the kitchen area to see if the place maintained hygiene. He picked up a small bowl and tasted the food – including rice, dal and veggies – that was being served to patients for lunch. “I have been doing rounds of various hospitals and checking the food quality that is served to patients. I found the quality of food not up to the mark in this facility. Our govt has doubled the rate for food served to patients. But how come the quality of food has not improved?” asked the minister of those in charge of the kitchen. Accompanied by local MLA Ritesh Tiwari, the health minister asked the hospital super to visit the kitchen at least twice a week.
