Madurai: Police have altered the FIR and invoked provisions of SC/ST (Prevention of Atrocities) Act against headmistress Vimaladevi of Government Model Higher Secondary School, Usilampatti, in connection with the suicide of a 16-year-old dalit girl student allegedly humiliated by her.

The student, Nijanthi, and her mother, P Thavamani, had approached the headmistress for her Class XI admission on Aug 25. Police had initially registered a case against Vimaladevi under section 108 of BNS for abetment of suicide.

Thavamani stood with folded hands, when Nijanthi tapped them down, according to the FIR. Thavamani told police that her daughter remained upset, skipped dinner and cried throughout that night. The headmaster allegedly objected to the gesture, accused the girl of arrogance and asked her to leave. Nijanthi was found hanging in her room the next day when her mother returned from work. Over the course of investigation, police altered the FIR and additionally invoked provisions of the SC/ST (Prevention of Atrocities) Act against her.
