Kolkata: Fulfilling its budget promise, Bengal govt has started providing a subsidy of Rs 2 per unit on electricity consumption for agricultural irrigation across the state, benefiting nearly 4 lakh farmers. “From Aug, the state govt has started providing a subsidy of Rs 2 per unit on power consumed through submersible pumps used for agricultural irrigation purposes. We have started passing on the benefits to around 4 lakh agricultural consumers. After the subsidy, WBSEDCL average charges of Rs 4.6 per unit for power consumed through submersible pumps during off-peak hours will come down to Rs 2.6 for the end consumers.

The govt will provide us the total subsidy amount,” said a WBSEDCL official. In an order, the West Bengal Electricity Regulatory Commission mandated WBSEDCL to clearly indicate in the energy bills of agricultural consumers the amount payable in terms of the tariff determined by the commission, the amount of state govt subsidy and the net amount payable.
