Madurai: Demonstrating a proactive approach to civic cleanliness, the Gomathipuram Thendral Nagar residents’ welfare association (RWA) has spearheaded a community-led voluntary waste segregation initiative. Setting an example for RWAs across Madurai, the association recently organised its bimonthly dry waste collection drive, gathering around 500kg of non-biodegradable waste from households.

“The drive is important because non-biodegradable waste including packaging materials can cause huge problems for water channels and plants when improperly disposed of,” Raghavan said. Social activist Mahamayan led the door-to-door collection, directly retrieving the items from homes and facilitating their delivery to a private garbage bank in Madurai for processing and safe disposal. Alongside the collection drive, association president D Raghavan and members engaged with the public to raise awareness about the new waste management practices. Residents were sensitised about the mandatory segregation of waste into four categories prior to handing it over for collection. He added that if needed, such drives will continue after the source segregation of waste begins to reduce the load on sanitation workers. Download the TOI App.
