Madurai: While Madurai corporation is making source segregation mandatory across all 100 wards, mayor in charge (deputy mayor) T Nagarajan has announced incentives for the households that follow best practices and properly segregate waste for a month in his ward 80.
Covering 3,500 households, the drive aims to encourage residents to segregate their daily waste before handing it over to door-to-door collection. Corporation officials, along with NGO Olirum Madurai, distributed four waste bins in different colours to every participating household in the ward.
The team is fixing QR code stickers on the doors of 3,500 houses. Nagarajan said the incentive will increase awareness and foster cleanliness in the locality. To monitor compliance and digitise the process, a team of students and faculty members, led by dean Shivaranjani, from Sethu Institute of Technology has deployed a tracking system via a mobile app and web portal. Every morning, sanitation workers will scan the QR codes as they collect the segregated waste, enabling the system to evaluate household compliance and assign daily performance scores based on how well the waste has been segregated.
