Coimbatore: Construction of an international-standard swimming pool at VOC Park in the city has reached the halfway mark, with the Coimbatore City Municipal Corporation (CCMC) aiming at completing the Rs 4.34 crore project by November.
The facility, being developed under the Namakku Naame scheme, is designed to provide a dedicated training and competition venue for swimmers. It will also benefit students and the public.
The project was among the sports infrastructure projects inspected by civic and district administration officials earlier this year, with instructions issued to expedite construction.
The pool will measure 50m x 25m and have 10 lanes, with each lane measuring 2.5m wide, according to a corporation official. It will have a maximum depth of about 10 feet and a dedicated water-treatment and purification system. Five 10 HP motors will be installed in the motor room, while 16 lights will illuminate the pool area. CRI Pumps contributed Rs 50 lakh towards construction through its corporate social responsibility initiative.

Separate changing rooms, bathrooms and toilets for male and female swimmers, besides lockers for keeping personal belongings, are part of the project. The infrastructure is intended to enable regular training and competitions and help nurture competitive swimmers in the region. The project has received private sector support. The contribution was handed over to the corporation in February. The swimming pool is part of a broader effort by the CCMC to strengthen sports infrastructure around VOC Park and the Nehru Stadium, where several indoor and outdoor sporting facilities are being developed.
