Lucknow: The Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC) on Wednesday issued a heavy rain alert for southern UP, including the Bundelkhand region, over the next few days, with widespread rainfall, thunderstorms and lightning likely across the state.

A well-marked low-pressure area over northeast Madhya Pradesh, with its trough passing through Kanpur, is expected to strengthen monsoon activity in the state, according to the Met office. Heavy rainfall is likely in southern districts on Thursday and Friday.

On Sept 4 and 5, Etawah, Auraiya and Jalaun are likely to witness heavy rainfall. Rainfall is also forecast between Sept 5 and 7 in Banda, Fatehpur, Kanpur Dehat, Kanpur Nagar, Etawah, Auraiya, Jalaun, Hamirpur, Mahoba, Jhansi and Lalitpur. Meanwhile, the state recorded 592.4 mm of rainfall between June 1 and Sept 2 against the seasonal normal of 607.5 mm, a deficit of 2%. Eastern UP received 603.2 mm of rainfall against a normal of 642 mm, while western UP recorded 577 mm against the normal of 559.2 mm. Kanpur Nagar recorded the highest rainfall in the state on Wednesday, with Kanpur Airforce receiving 59.4 mm, followed closely by Lakhimpur Kheri at 59.2 mm. Fursatganj in Amethi recorded 50.6 mm, Etawah 50 mm and Prayagraj 47.1 mm.

There is a higher possibility of heavy rainfall in Banda, Kanpur Dehat, Kanpur Nagar, Etawah, Auraiya, Jalaun, Hamirpur and Mahoba, along with adjoining areas.
