OpenAI co-founder and president Greg Brockman has said that steering one of the most prominent artificial intelligence (AI) companies comes with immense psychological and physical strain, but he credits one person with keeping him grounded: his wife. Speaking during a private interview at OpenAI’s New York office inside SoHo’s Puck Building, Brockman opened up about the grueling emotional toll of steering the generative AI pioneer.
Brockman on navigating 10 years of chaos and industry turmoil
Brockman has been beside CEO Sam Altman throughout OpenAI’s entire history, even sticking through the corporate turmoil of Altman’s brief 2023 ouster before taking a brief sabbatical late last year.
“It never gets easier; you just go faster,” Brockman said, reflecting on the continuous operating rhythm at OpenAI while also noting the phrase as the core ethos driving the company’s workforce. Replying to questions around the economics of running foundation AI labs, Brockman explained that current business models are merely introductory, stating: “The fundamental value delivery that we are after—we’re not there yet. The massive value creation is yet to come.”
