Mahomes Aims to Build Off-Field Empire

Patrick Mahomes, the Kansas City Chiefs quarterback, has expressed a desire to expand his influence beyond the football field. In an April 2021 interview, he stated, “I am trying to build an empire off the field in every way.” Mahomes cited the careers of sports icons like Michael Jordan and Alex Rodriguez as inspirations for his ambitions. He noted, “I watch a lot of the great athletes that came before me, and they found ways to build their empire and to build themselves up off the field, so I am trying to do that as much as possible.” This reflects a growing trend among athletes to leverage their sports success into broader business opportunities.

Mahomes joined the ownership group of the Kansas City Current in 2022 alongside his wife, Brittany Mahomes. Then came Formula 1. In October 2023, Mahomes joined an investment group that took a stake in Alpine F1. His portfolio now touches baseball, women’s soccer, MLS, Formula 1, entertainment and sports technology, giving him interests that extend far beyond his work as the Chiefs quarterback.

That pattern says more about his strategy than any single investment. “The biggest thing is to do the stuff you love and you have a passion for because if you do that, you usually figure out a way to make it work,” Mahomes said. He added that he wanted to invest in things he “truly believe[d] in.”

The Current’s official profile also identifies him as a co-owner of the Kansas City Royals and Sporting Kansas City, while listing him as the founder of 2PM Productions. His involvement with the Current also made him the first active NFL player to hold equity in an NWSL team. He explained at the time that he had been watching the sport grow and wanted to take advantage of the opportunity. Mahomes also made it clear that his interest in sports ownership had not stopped there, saying he was always looking around for opportunities outside the NFL. Mahomes has gradually moved from being the face of brands to becoming an owner and investor himself. The bigger story, though, is not just Whoop. Mahomes has repeatedly chosen businesses and sports properties that connect with his interests. His investment in Alpine gave him a place inside one of the world’s fastest-growing sports properties, while his ownership positions in Kansas City teams keep him closely connected to the city where his NFL career took off. His role with 2PM Productions also shows that he is building something on the media side rather than relying entirely on football income.

His actions since then have followed that idea.
