The police have registered a case against the couple under Section 93 (exposure and abandonment of child under 12 years, by parent or person having care of it) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and relevant sections of the Juvenile Justice Act. Due to their poor financial condition, the couple decided to abandon the girl, thinking that someone would take care of her. A medical examination confirmed that the girl was in good health.
“Our police constables were taking care of the girl, who did not understand Marathi,” an officer from the Talegaon MIDC police said. The officer said the police checked CCTV footage from the area around Bhandara hill but could not find any clue about the person who had abandoned the girl there. The officer said the couple initially claimed that they had found the girl in Mumbai. “However, they approached the police after regretting their decision to abandon their daughter,” the officer said.
Talegaon MIDC police found the girl and rescued her. A team from the Talegaon MIDC police reached the spot and took the girl to Yashwantrao Chavan Memorial Hospital (YCMH). However, during sustained questioning, they admitted that the girl was their daughter. The couple is from Uttar Pradesh and currently lives in Vasuli in Khed taluka. The girl’s father works as a daily wage worker.
The couple approached the police station on Monday and admitted to abandoning their daughter. On Sunday around 3pm, some people noticed the girl alone on Bhandara hill and alerted the Pimpri Chinchwad police.
Pune: Unable to make ends meet and provide for their family, a 23-year-old daily wage worker and his 21-year-old wife allegedly abandoned their two-year-old daughter on a hillock near Talegaon, about 35km from Pune, on Sunday.
