Ahmedabad: As many as 161 bridges under state’s roads and buildings (R&B) department were declared dangerous during 2024-25 and 2025-26, according to data tabled in state assembly. Of these, five bridges in Ahmedabad and Vadodara districts were found to be damaged during fitness checks.
Of the 161 bridges declared dangerous, 82 were identified in 2024-25, including 39 major, 25 medium and 18 minor bridges. In 2025-26, 79 more bridges were classified as dangerous, comprising 19 major, 42 medium and 18 minor bridges. In a separate reply, govt stated that as of Aug 1, the R&B department had 199 bridges in Ahmedabad district and 238 in Vadodara district, taking the combined total to 437 bridges.

The govt said all bridges declared dangerous had been closed to heavy vehicles as a safety measure to prevent accidents and protect structures from further damage. The state govt provided details in response to two separate questions raised by Congress MLA from Danilimda, Shailesh Parmar, who sought information on bridges in Ahmedabad and Vadodara, while Anklav MLA Amit Chavda sought details of dangerous bridges across Gujarat. Fitness checks were conducted on all these bridges during the preceding two years. The govt also stated that new bridges were constructed periodically, depending on the availability of funds and technical requirements. Download the TOI App.
