Mumbai: The Maharashtra State Judicial Employees Federation’s proposed agitation over “equal pay for equal work” for employees of district and subordinate courts has gathered momentum, with the Maharashtra State Judges Association extending its “full and unequivocal” backing to the employees’ demand for revision of their pay scales on a par with high court employees.
Maharashtra Judicial Employees Demand Pay Parity
The Maharashtra State Judges Association has initiated a phased statewide agitation beginning September 16, 2025. The protest stems from a long-standing demand for salary parity between employees of subordinate courts and those of the Bombay High Court. This proposal has reportedly been pending with the state government since January 31, 2025, without any decision made despite numerous representations from the association.
The Judges Association emphasizes that their demand aligns with the recommendations of a Special Committee established by the Bombay High Court. This committee submitted its report on the same date, January 31, 2025.
Judicial employees in district and subordinate courts play a crucial role in the justice system, managing judicial records, court administration, and various essential judicial functions. The association asserts that their contributions involve significant responsibility and a heavy workload.
The association argues that the effective operation of the justice delivery system relies heavily on the services of these judicial employees. They describe the demand for pay parity as legitimate, fair, and justified, advocating for their compensation and service conditions to be aligned with those of equivalent roles within the high court establishment, in accordance with the principle of equal pay for equal work.
