Quoting Fields Medalist Terence Tao, Sridhar Vembu shared an X (formerly Twitter) post that said companies with critical know-how, intellectual property and trade secrets should be careful about trusting their information with frontier AI labs. Tao said, “The incentives may now be pointing in the direction of no longer sharing any promising research directions with the broader community, which would reverse centuries of traditions of open science and do serious long-term damage to the future of the field”. Zoho founder Sridhar Vembu has raised concerns about the growing use of frontier AI models by companies handling sensitive information. The mathematician warned that AI could change how researchers share ideas.
“Your company’s know-how belongs in your own AI model,” Vembu wrote. He also said that building and running private AI models is becoming easier and cheaper. “Fortunately they are easy to train and becoming cheaper to run too”.
