In Pilibhit, a district and sessions court has sentenced four family members to life imprisonment for the brutal murder of a 30-year-old farmer. The incident involved the victim being tied to a tree and dragged along a village road with ropes, leading to his death. This case highlights the severe consequences of violent crime and the legal system’s response to such acts.
The incident took place on July 10, 2024, in Bhuda Semnagar village of Gajraula. An FIR was lodged the next day based on a complaint by the victim’s father, Ramchandra Verma, against five men — Madan Lal (55), Bhim Sen (40), Suraj Pal (24), Surendra Pal (37) and Ramkumar Dhimar (51) — and a 45-year-old woman, Gangadeyi, under BNS sections 103 (murder), 352 (intentional insult), 351(2) (criminal intimidation) and 3(5) (acts done by several persons in furtherance of common intention). Police arrested all six within 48 hours of the FIR being lodged and filed separate chargesheets against them on Aug 9, 2024. District govt counsel (DGC) Mahendra Pal Gangwar said, “The bail pleas of all six people were rejected by the district and sessions court between Sept 3 and Oct 25, 2024, considering the severity of the crime.
They subsequently approached the Allahabad high court and obtained bail orders.”
Court Sentences Four After Trial of Gangadeyi and Ramkumar
The trial involving the deaths of Gangadeyi and her husband, Ramkumar, concluded with the conviction of four remaining defendants. Gangadeyi and Ramkumar passed away from natural causes during the proceedings. District and Sessions Judge Ravindre Kumar proceeded with the case, ultimately sentencing the four individuals on Friday evening.
In addition to life sentences, the court imposed a cumulative fine of Rs 1.20 lakh. The judge also specified that the time already spent in jail prior to securing bail would be deducted from their life sentences. Failure to pay the imposed fine may result in an extension of their sentences, according to the District Government Counsel (DGC).
