Speaking to TOI , DCP (crime) Imam Raja Kasim said: “Miscreants use the AI-generated images of others displayed on social media as their DP, impersonating reputed person and luring unsuspecting victims into sharing personal or financial data. Bengaluru police and cybersecurity experts have warned citizens that uploading high-quality selfies to unregulated, third-party apps secretly harvests sensitive biometric data and exposes users to massive identity theft risks. Some police stations in the city have already spread warning messages through posters and social media posts. Sometimes even banking credentials can be obtained to siphon off funds from the account. Instagram ’s 1980s AI trends can also be misused to commit cybercrimes. Key cybersecurity & privacy risks Biometric data collection and facial recognition : A clear selfie provides high-definition biometric data of your face. Once processed, this data can be used for facial recognition profiling or stored in training datasets without explicit future control Deepfake and identity misuse : High-quality original photos of your face are the ideal source material for malicious actors to create deepfakes. Uploaded photos can end up leaked, scraped, or traded on unauthorized networks, leading to impersonation, synthetic media scams, or identity theft XIF and location metadata exposure : Digital photos often contain hidden EXIF metadata, including your exact GPS location, device model, time, and date stamp. Uploading unedited original photos can inadvertently share where you live or work
