The process starts with coco peat and soil, gently moulded into Bappa’s form before coriander and tulsi seeds are placed within, giving each idol a quiet promise of existence after immersion, which will be done in a pot filled with soil. As preparations for Ganesh Utsav gather pace, devotees are moving beyond conventional idols made of clay, stone, wood and metal. Many are going for idols made of bamboo, fresh flowers, seeds, cow dung and even chocolate. Pankaj Gupta, who runs a studio in Vikas Nagar, is curating Ganeshas embedded with marigold seeds in different sizes, using ‘saadu clay’ sourced from Mumbai. Made entirely without colours, his creations stem from his belief that nature’s creator expects us to protect His creation.
