India’s first indigenous high-speed train is expected to begin trial runs in May or June 2027. Testing will take place on the Mumbai-Ahmedabad corridor, marking a major step toward launching the country’s first bullet train service.
Trials first, commuters next: Service nears launch
The first body frame of India’s high-speed train has been completed and sent for squeeze testing. The Surat-Vapi stretch is expected to be completed by December, with different parts planned to open in phases. The high-speed service is expected to sharply reduce travel time between key cities. Passengers travelling from Vadodara will be able to reach Mumbai in around one and a half hours by bullet train (AI image) The train is expected to undergo two to four months of testing after trials begin. Following the testing period, the service will be opened to commuters, with the inauguration expected after the trials are completed. The Surat-Bilimora section is planned as the first stretch of the Mumbai-Ahmedabad bullet train corridor to become operational. The service will then expand to other sections across the corridor (AI image) After Surat-Bilimora, the Vapi-Surat section will follow, then Vapi-Ahmedabad, Ahmedabad-Thane and finally the Mumbai leg once the Thane stretch is ready. Seven additional high-speed rail corridors have been proposed beyond Mumbai-Ahmedabad.
