Jalpaiguri: Cooch Behar police on Monday deployed 80 personnel, including 30 CAPF personnel, within a 20-metre radius of rebel Trinamool MP Jagadish Chandra Barma Basunia’s ancestral home in Sitai amid protests against him.
Basunia had defeated BJP’s Nisith Pramanik in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections while serving as the Sitai MLA. His wife, Sangita, later won the seat in a by-election. Basunia later joined the rebel faction led by Ritabrata Banerjee after the party lost office. The unrest first erupted in Aug when he returned to Sitai following the declaration of the poll results. Sitai was the only seat in Cooch Behar retained by Trinamool this year. Download the TOI App.
