A 40-year-old government primary school teacher was shot dead in Najibabad, Bijnor, by a local youth who believed the teacher was aiding a friendship between a Muslim man and a Hindu woman. The suspect, Gaurav Chaudhary, later surrendered to the police at the Najibabad station. This incident highlights ongoing tensions surrounding interfaith relationships in the region.
On Tuesday, Chaudhary lay in wait near a canal about 150 metres from the school. Victim Mohd Naushad had been living in Rahatpur Khurd due to his posting at the nearby primary school in Purushottampur, according to Bijnor SP Krishna Kumar Bishnoi.
Police said Chaudhary harboured a grudge against Naushad because he suspected that the teacher had helped his acquaintance, Mohd Talib, befriend a Hindu woman, who is a neighbour of Chaudhary and whom he “considered a sister”. Chaudhary had recently spotted the woman riding on a motorcycle with Talib, police said. As Naushad was returning home, Chaudhary opened fire, striking him in the abdomen and leaving him critically injured.
Following a complaint by the victim’s wife, Khurshida, police registered a case against the accused under BNS Section 103(1) (murder).
