The market is attracting newer entrants, including Rolls-Royce and Tesla
Mercedes-Benz India has a customer base of more than 14,000 cars in the state, which contributes about 8% of its annual sales nationally. The company recorded 15% growth in TN sales during Jan-Sept 2026, outpacing the state’s overall luxury car market. The company has led the state’s luxury car market since 2018 and now commands a share of close to 44%, said Hardeep Singh Brar, president and CEO of BMW Group India. Its sales in TN grew 14% through Sept 2026, while BMW accounted for around half of the state’s luxury electric vehicle segment. Its EV sales in TN increased by more than 13% between January and October this year. Its Chennai plant has been producing BMW and MINI cars for the Indian market since 2007. BMW puts the average age of its Indian customers at around 40. Iyer said corporate customers account for around 35% of Mercedes-Benz’s buyer base. With prices starting at around `7 crore and rising with customisation, a purchase is often planned years in advance or tied to a major milestone.
“We are one of the first luxury OEMs to realise TN’s potential as a luxury car market in the long run,” said Santosh Iyer, MD & CEO of Mercedes-Benz India. They combine a global outlook with a strong attachment to their roots,” Brar said. Customers are increasingly preferring top-end luxury vehicles, performance cars and battery electric vehicles ,” Iyer said. They say, ‘As soon as my house is completed, I am going to get that car,’” said Vasanthi Bhupathi, dealer principal for Rolls-Royce and BMW.
The luxury car market in Tamil Nadu is entering a new phase, with a growing pool of affluent buyers, younger customers and new international marques reshaping demand. Long dominated by German brands Mercedes-Benz, BMW and Audi, alongside JLR, Volvo Cars and Porsche, the market is attracting newer entrants, including Rolls-Royce and Tesla. First-generation entrepreneurs, salaried professionals and affluent business families are increasingly embracing luxury cars, while demand is spreading beyond Chennai. Rising aspirations and economic prosperity are driving this expansion. The growth is reflected in the performance of established brands. The company has continued to expand its retail and service network, including strengthening its Chennai operations to cater to the growing customer base. BMW has consolidated its position. BMW also has a manufacturing advantage. The company sees TN as both a major market and a manufacturing base, with demand extending beyond Chennai to Coimbatore, Madurai, Trichy and Salem. “The modern Indian luxury car buyer is younger, more self-made and far more individualistic than previous generations. Many are first-generation entrepreneurs and professionals who see luxury not merely as a reward for success but as an expression of who they are. Entry models such as the GLA SUV and the CLA electric vehicle are attracting first-time buyers, even as demand for the brand’s top-end portfolio remains strong. The trend is evident beyond Chennai. Coimbatore remains a key market, while Madurai, Salem, Puducherry and Trichy are contributing to Mercedes-Benz’s expansion. “Growth in luxury consumption is primarily driven by first-generation entrepreneurs, manufacturing and textile businesses, and young salaried professionals. The arrival of more brands is another sign of the market’s changing dynamics. Rolls-Royce, whose history in India stretches back to the early 20th century, recently inaugurated a showroom in Chennai. Tesla has also entered the city’s premium automotive market, opening its sixth outlet in India, while JLR has expanded its presence with a new facility in the state capital, giving affluent buyers more choice and access to services. For Rolls-Royce, the appeal lies in exclusivity and personalisation rather than volume. “Luxury is limited only by your imagination. We have customers who plan for two or three years. Some purchases mark weddings, anniversaries or significant birthdays, while others celebrate business milestones, she added. Mercedes-Benz is also seeing interest in customised vehicles. Its exclusive Atelier luxury boutique in Chennai’s Adyar neighbourhood caters to customers seeking bespoke specifications and personalised finishes.

Meanwhile, free trade agreements (FTAs) could provide a further boost, particularly by improving the economics of importing fully built cars. Lower import duties, subject to the terms and implementation of individual agreements, could make some models more viable and give manufacturers greater flexibility to introduce niche products. The India-UK FTA has already prompted British marque Aston Martin to announce price reductions. Mercedes-Benz sees FTAs as a potential catalyst for growth, offering access to newer models and the possibility of lower prices. BMW, meanwhile, sees the agreements as an opportunity to broaden customer choice while maintaining its commitment to local manufacturing. For TN, the opportunity extends beyond consumption. BMW’s Chennai plant and JLR’s manufacturing facility near Ranipet strengthen the state’s position in the premium automotive ecosystem, linking local manufacturing with a growing market for luxury cars. The market is no longer confined to a small pool of traditional luxury buyers in the state. Younger entrepreneurs and professionals, rising wealth in industrial centres and growing interest in electric and personalised vehicles are widening demand. Tamil Nadu’s luxury car market is evolving, with a broader customer base and a more diverse range of offerings, even as established players retain their dominance. Download the TOI App.
