Mangaluru: The stone quarry and stone crusher owners’ associations of Dakshina Kannada and Udupi have decided to commence an indefinite strike from Friday, demanding the immediate withdrawal of the existing dual system of royalty collection and the implementation of a clear and uniform single policy in royalty collection. During the strike, quarrying, crushing and related supply activities will remain suspended.

The association stated that royalty must be collected only at one stage, and the dual royalty collection system must be stopped immediately. At present, royalty is collected from quarry or lease owners for the extraction of minor minerals. At the same time, royalty is also deducted at the stage of utilisation of the same mineral in works undertaken by various govt departments, including the PWD, water resources department and other agencies. This has resulted in a situation where royalty is effectively collected at two different stages for the same mineral, the association members noted. “Such a dual royalty collection system places an additional financial burden on the quarry and crusher industry and creates serious concerns regarding transparency, consistency and clarity in the govt’s royalty collection mechanism. The govt should collect royalty either from the mine or quarry lease owner, or from the concerned department,” they demanded. Download the TOI App.
