Lucknow/Prayagraj: Seventy-six families living in PMAY houses built on land earlier allegedly occupied by gangster-turned-politician Atiq Ahmed in Prayagraj’s Lukerganj area lit 2,100 diyas on Wednesday to mark Prime Minister Narendra Modi ’s 76th birthday and pray for his long life and good health. The BJP said the land was freed from encroachment following directions from chief minister Yogi Adityanath , after which 76 houses were constructed under the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (PMAY) and allotted to economically weaker families. He said the Lukerganj programme was particularly significant as the 76 families living in the 76 houses offered their blessings and good wishes to Modi on his 76th birthday.

The “Aashirwad Ka Diya” programme was organised as part of the BJP’s ongoing “Sewa Sankalp Abhiyan” and was attended by former UP cabinet minister and City West MLA Siddharth Nath Singh. “Where there was mafia occupation, there are now homes for the poor,” Singh said, describing the development as an example of the state govt’s action against the mafia and the Centre’s welfare initiatives. Congratulating Modi on his birthday, Singh said the lighting of the “Aashirwad Ka Diya” was part of the “Sewa Sankalp Abhiyan”, launched to mark the Prime Minister’s 25 years in public life.

Singh said families that earlier did not have permanent homes were now living in their own houses with “dignity and security”. He described the project as a reflection of the Modi govt’s focus on the welfare of the poor and the Yogi Adityanath government’s campaign against illegal encroachments and the mafia.
