Kanpur: An FIR has been registered against a youth for allegedly beating a dog to death in Kokpura locality on Pachawali Road in Etawah on Sept 18.
A 56-second video purportedly shows a youth repeatedly striking the dog, with animal welfare activists later filing a complaint over the incident. The youth allegedly hit the animal about 20 times and continued beating it after it died. Based on her complaint, Friends Colony police registered a case on Tuesday evening under Section 325 of the BNS and Section 11(1) of the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act.

Residents said the dog had recently become aggressive and chased people in an attempt to bite them. Friends Colony station in charge Amit Kumar Mishra said they were examining the video to identify those involved, he said, adding that the accused would be arrested after the investigation. Fearing that it might be rabid and could harm someone, the youth allegedly began beating it with sticks. Animal welfare activists objected to the manner in which the dog was beaten, saying residents could have informed the relevant department or administration if the animal posed a threat. After the video surfaced, Radhika Vajpeyi, operator of Helpless Paws Animal Trust, submitted a police complaint. The complaint named the son of Sushil, a Kokpura resident. Download the TOI App.
