Lucknow: On the trail of a motorcycle theft gang, police arrested two members, residents of Banke district in Nepal, and recovered 12 stolen motorcycles early Wednesday morning. The two accused had fled following an encounter in the Rupaidiha area of Bahraich late Tuesday night.
Raj Jasgarh and Mohammad Junaid, both residents of Banke district in Nepal, were arrested by police around 6 am on Wednesday. Police said based on information provided by those arrested, 10 additional stolen motorcycles hidden in a forest area were recovered, taking the total number of motorcycles seized to 12. His two associates escaped and police launched a search operation to trace them. Police intercepted a group of suspected vehicle thieves on the Rupaidiha-Hamrahia road while they were allegedly attempting to flee towards Nepal with stolen motorcycles. SHO Harendra Kumar Mishra and his team were patrolling the area when they received information about stolen motorcycles being taken to Nepal through the Jaitapur-Chikaniya route. When police signalled three suspects to stop, they turned their motorcycles around and attempted to flee. They also opened fire on the police team, prompting the police to retaliate, and one of the suspects, Abdul alias Abdul Salam, resident of Sitapurwa Sahjana under Rupaidiha police station, was wounded. Police are now investigating the source of the stolen motorcycles and their destination. The role of other members of the network is also being examined.
