Chairman Kamlesh Patel said the contractor would face appropriate action and “won’t be spared”. Sources said the underground tank had not been cleaned for nearly two years. Patel said instructions had been issued to ensure that all AMC water tanks are cleaned every six months. Deputy municipal commissioner Riddhesh Rawal said the ex-servicemen would help enforce parking rules, including at CG Road, where vehicles are allegedly parked haphazardly despite smart parking facilities.
Ahmedabad: The discovery of bones inside an underground water tank at Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation’s (AMC) Asarwa pumping station has prompted the civic body to initiate action against the contractor responsible for its operations and maintenance (O&M). As per the regular maintenance schedule, water tanks across the city are supposed to be cleaned every six months. The remains were found when the Asarwa tank was finally taken up for cleaning. They will also act against encroachments by vegetable vendors operating outside newly constructed vegetable markets. Download the TOI App.
The issue came up for discussion at AMC standing committee meeting on Thursday.
AMC has prepared immersion ponds at 38 locations across the city. A total of 290 fire brigade personnel, equipped with safety gear, will be deployed at various sites. Two boats have also been arranged, while special cranes have been installed at all 38 locations to facilitate the immersion of large idols. Meanwhile, AMC plans to deploy more than 100 retired army personnel on a contractual basis to assist with enforcement related to Pay & Park facilities, free parking plots, the Cattle Nuisance Control Department (CNCD) and the estate department.
The committee also reviewed arrangements for Ganesh idol immersion.
