Bengaluru: A family allegedly lost Rs 22 lakh after a man claiming to be a PU department employee promised to secure an MBBS seat for their elder daughter, only to go incommunicado after collecting the money. Anitha BM, 45, a homemaker, said her family was outside the PU department office in Malleswaram in the first week of Feb when a man overheard their conversation about their daughter’s plans to pursue medicine after appearing for NEET in 2025. He reportedly told the family he could arrange an MBBS seat at a prestigious college for Rs 22 lakh. The family handed over Rs 4 lakh and their daughter’s documents on Feb 11, followed by Rs 13 lakh on Feb 20. Two days later, Chandrashekhar collected another Rs 5 lakh, claiming the seat had been confirmed. The entire Rs 22 lakh was paid in cash in 2025, Anitha claimed.

The man introduced himself as Chandrashekhar and claimed to work at PU board. Having gained the family’s confidence by speaking knowledgeably about NEET, Chandrashekhar later met them near a fuel station on Tumakuru Road. A few days later, the family tried contacting him, but his phone was switched off. When they approached PU department to verify his credentials, they learnt no person by that name worked there.
