After chat with students, CM reviews blind spots, safety gaps on DU campus

The emergence of CCTV footage has added a fresh dimension to the case

New Delhi: Chief minister Rekha Gupta Wednesday inspected Delhi University’s North Campus and directed officials to address safety-related concerns raised by students, including dark spots, damaged footpaths and gaps in CCTV coverage.

The CM assured the students that the govt would take the necessary steps to address their genuine concerns,” the chief minister’s office said. The inspection highlighted several issues linked to student safety, following which Gupta directed immediate corrective action, according to officials. “Despite adequate lighting on the roads, several areas inside the campus remained dark, even though women students frequently move through these stretches,” she said.

“In an informal conversation, the CM asked whether they faced any difficulties or felt unsafe while travelling at night and encouraged them to share any concerns related to their colleges as well. As she walked through the campus, the chief minister identified multiple dark spots and sought explanations from officials. The chief minister also expressed displeasure over broken and uneven footpaths at several locations and instructed officials to inspect the entire area and carry out repairs wherever necessary.

Referring to concerns related to hostels and paying guest accommodation, she said Delhi govt was working on a PG policy that would prescribe necessary standards and regulations for the sector, while new hostels and improved accommodation facilities were also being planned. After reviewing CCTV arrangements, Gupta directed officials to install cameras in uncovered areas and ensure that no sensitive location remained outside the surveillance network. She also sought details of PCR vehicle deployment and the availability of women police personnel at night, stressing the need for closer coordination between Delhi Police and the university administration. Gupta further directed officials to improve cleanliness and public facilities on campus. The chief minister also encouraged women students to undergo self-defence training.
