The crime branch has registered a fresh case in connection with the violence that broke out

The emergence of CCTV footage has added a fresh dimension to the case

New Delhi: The crime branch has registered a fresh case in connection with the violence that broke out during the CJP-led protest in the capital on July 20. The probe will focus on a larger conspiracy and whether the violence was preplanned.

An SC order, dated Sept 1, had stated: “Central govt/Delhi Police shall be at liberty to register a fresh FIR with respect to the 2,873 individuals as described in paragraph 4 of its application… Such FIR shall be registered without prejudice to the rights of the affected parties to take lawful recourse in accordance with law. In paragraph 4 of the application moved by Delhi Police , further permission was sought to register a fresh FIR with respect to 2,873 individuals, who are said to have serious criminal antecedents as per National Crime Records Bureau database, the order added. On July 20, protesters who had gathered following an appeal by CJP marched towards Parliament, leading to heightened tension in central Delhi.

The case was registered this week in compliance with a court order, said police sources. “The sections invoked include attempt to murder, as we have MLCs of people who were injured, along with provisions related to damage to public property and rioting,” a police source said. As the protesters tried to advance, security personnel moved to contain the crowd. Police and other security personnel used teargas and resorted to lathicharge to disperse the demonstrators and prevent them from moving further towards the high-security zone around Parliament.

Police are also checking whether social media groups were created to mobilise people before the violence.
