New Delhi: Delhi may soon move towards a unified parking authority, with lieutenant governor TS Sandhu directing MCD , NDMC, DDA and Delhi Police to prepare a framework on priority.
MCD’s base rate for cars is now Rs 20 per hour, while NDMC charges Rs 50 per hour for on-street parking and DMRC Rs 30 for up to six hours. Chairing a review meeting Thursday about the growing parking requirement and mess at public places due to illegal parking, Sandhu emphasised various measures, including asking Delhi Traffic Police to tackle the city’s mobility bottlenecks.
“Delhi’s residents needed more parking facilities and agencies need to work together to resolve the problem rather than working in silos,” said an official. Other agencies, including Municipal Corporation of Delhi and New Delhi Municipal Council, were asked to create more parking spaces, make better use of existing facilities and crack down jointly with the traffic police on unauthorised parking. LG also called for uniform parking charges across MCD, NDMC, Delhi Development Authority and Delhi Metro facilities, noting varying rates.
Delhi Traffic Police informed the meeting that till Oct 5, 13.3 lakh challans and 5.5 lakh notices were issued this year for unauthorised parking, while 1.2 lakh vehicles were towed with the help of 76 cranes. MCD has prepared a district-wise enforcement plan for Oct 15 to Dec 15, covering identified parking hotspots and market corridors, to be implemented with the traffic police. MCD has 463 parking sites — 433 surface and 30 multi-level/stack — with a capacity of 94,831 equivalent car spaces. It has identified 79 additional sites for surface parking, planning to take the total to 542 by Dec. Another 14 multi-level and stack parking projects, with a capacity of 6,052 equivalent car spaces, are under consideration. NDMC has 126 parking sites and is preparing to bring its facilities under an intelligent, integrated parking system. It currently has such facilities at 127 of its 242 stations, providing space for approximately 1.3 lakh vehicles, including 14,426 cars, 1.1 lakh two-wheelers and 11,309 cycles. Ten of them are multi-level, and 65 are smart parking facilities, with 52 already integrated with the DMRC app.
