“We will launch the portal soon so that it is known where students are living in Delhi and in what kind of accommodation,” Sood said. “Where issues are arising in legal operations due to restrictions in the Master Plan and DMC Act, a sub-committee will study that,” Sood said. Sood said govt was working towards regulations and laws to streamline PG and hostel operations. “We will soon bring regulations to streamline this system,” he said.
The proposed portal will initially collect essential information about the students, their locations and accommodation, including room counts and basic amenities. The initial rollout will be kept simple to facilitate data collection without causing alarm among accommodation operators. The meeting also considered a proposal to make CCTV coverage mandatory at entry and exit points, and common areas of PGs. Download the TOI App.
It will explore if relaxations can be provided within a 5-6-km radius of educational hubs, as well as in group housing societies and areas covered by resident welfare associations, to enable safe and legal accommodation. Delhi University and MCD will also test a proposed registration portal within two to four days, ahead of a govt campaign to collect details of students and their accommodation across the capital. The steps were decided at the second meeting of the high-powered committee on student accommodation and safety, chaired by education minister Ashish Sood, Thursday. The committee was formed after a building housing a paying guest (PG) accommodation collapsed in Satya Niketan last month, claiming seven lives. The committee has been tasked with developing regulations for PGs and hostels across Delhi. A sub-committee of representatives from DDA, MCD and Delhi govt, along with the DU vice-chancellor, will examine restrictions under the Master Plan and the Delhi Municipal Corporation Act that pose hurdles to legal PG operations.
