AGARTALA: Tripura hosted its first stakeholders’ meeting on carbon sequestration and climate finance, engaging 25 government departments, academic institutions, NABARD, and civil society organizations, on Tuesday, aiming to explore potential opportunities and channelise strategies. The Department of Good Governance, in collaboration with ARPAN Society, Directorate of Biotechnology, IGDC Tripura project, and JICA, organized the event, with experts from the Climate Action Network of South Asia (CANSA) leading discussions. NITI Aayog has pledged support to Tripura in this initiative, recognizing the state’s potential, Gitte underlined. The state government is committed to progressing towards a green economy to mitigate climate change impacts. P S Banerjee, OSD to the Chief Minister, noted climate vulnerabilities faced by Tripura in recent years, citing reports of seasonal cycle changes, irregular rainfall patterns, and rising temperatures. Experts Dr Jayanta Basu and Dr Sanjoy Baishst discussed Tripura’s climate vulnerability and adaptation strategies. They elaborated on accessing climate funds aimed at community development, livelihood enhancement, green job creation, and land management, besides carbon trading processes. Aejay Bandhyapadhya, Team Leader for Asia-Pacific Climate Change at the International Finance Corporation, along with Tanusri Bhattacharjee, General Manager of NABARD Tripura, discussed financial support mechanisms for Tripura’s green projects and how to access climate funds.
