Food department checking in hostels and canteens in Surat
Gandhinagar : Continuing its statewide checks after the recent food poisoning case at P P Savani hostel in Surat, the state health department on Thursday inspected 151 hostel kitchens, messes and canteens by 6pm. Of the 151 establishments inspected on Thursday, 25 were govt-run, 20 semi-govt and 106 privately operated. Officials issued improvement notices to 33 establishments where lapses related to hygiene, food safety or quality were found. The department also collected 23 food samples for quality testing.
An official statement said health minister Praful Pansheriya had directed the Food and Drug Control Administration to carry out intensive inspections to ensure compliance with food safety and hygiene norms. The samples will be sent for further analysis, the statement said. Officials said the drive is aimed at ensuring that students and citizens are served safe and quality food.
The department added that strict action would continue against adulterators and establishments found violating food safety regulations.
