The Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) has approved initiating the process to confer heritage status on 382 buildings outside the Walled City, including more than 10 structures associated with Gandhiji and the freedom struggle. The AMC’s Heritage and Recreational Committee approved the proposal on Aug 24, followed by the standing committee. Among the most significant additions is Gujarat Vidyapith, founded by Gandhiji on Oct 18, 1920, amid the Non-Cooperation Movement. Gandhi sites for heritage tag Another important landmark is Navajivan Press, where Gandhi’s autobiography, ‘The Story of My Experiments with Truth’, was published in book form on Nov 29, 1925, after appearing in serialised form in his newspaper. The list also includes the Old Circuit House in Shahibaug, where British Judge Broomfield sentenced Gandhi to six years’ imprisonment on March 18, 1922, following his sedition trial. Inspections found that seven of the 382 structures had already been demolished, including the Rector’s Bungalow and Commerce College Building on Gujarat College campus, Kaloliya Vadi Temple on Kankaria Road, a heritage chabutro and Tripathi House in Sarkhej, the heritage gate of Vachlo Vas in Mithakhali village, and Harshvardhan Mangaldas House near Parimal Garden.

Because it was where Gandhi and Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel first met — an encounter commemorated by a plaque but, until now, lacking formal heritage protection, gujarat Club at Lal Darwaja, established in 1888, has been included. The Heritage Conservation Committee has now invited objections and suggestions from citizens as part of the formal process, a senior AMC official said. Ahmedabad: On the eve of Mahatma Gandhi ’s birth anniversary, several Ahmedabad landmarks associated with the Father of the Nation and the freedom movement are finally set to receive heritage protection — more than a decade after the process began. Details of the structures have also been uploaded on the AMC website. Gandhiji had called for a boycott of British educational institutions and established the Vidyapith to help shape the character of India’s youth. Yet, more than a century after its foundation, the institution had remained without formal heritage protection. The move was stalled after AMC and heritage authorities stressed its historical significance and sought its preservation. Dandi Bridge, associated with the historic Salt March, will also be protected, along with Hriday Kunj, Mira Kutir, Magan Niwas and the PTC College Building at Gandhi Ashram. The structure itself came under threat earlier this year when roads and buildings department proposed its demolition, citing the high cost of restoration.
