Gandhinagar: Ahmedabad is set to get dedicated Freedom Circuits that will take visitors through the city’s links with India’s freedom movement, with three thematic routes planned around Mahatma Gandhi , Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel and a wider “Kranti Yatra” covering 28 locations associated with the struggle for independence. Speaking to TOI, top govt officials said that while Ahmedabad already has dedicated tourism circuits showcasing heritage, museums, religious places and modern architecture, the Freedom Circuits would focus exclusively on locations associated with the freedom struggle, particularly those linked to Gandhi and Patel. Special literature will be prepared for the freedom circuits for tourists and citizens and logistics aspects like transportation are also being worked out,” said officials.
The proposed Mahatma Gandhi Circuit will stretch from Kochrab Ashram to Sabarmati Ashram, covering five locations — Kochrab Ashram, Sabarmati Ashram, Gujarat Vidyapith, Priyavadanbhai’s Bungalow and Gujarat Club. The route will bring together places linked to Gandhiji’s activities and the nationalist movement in Ahmedabad. A separate Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel Circuit will connect Sardar Patel Bhavan to Sardar Patel Smarak in Shahibaug. It will cover Sardar Patel Bhavan at the AMC office in Danapith, Sansar Sudhara Hall at Raikhad, Gujarat Club in Bhadra and Sardar Patel Smarak. The list includes homes of Umakant Kadia, Dr Balvantrai Kanuga, Jeevanlal Baristar, Balvantrai P Thakor, Chandulal Sakarlal Thakor, Dr Neelkanthrai Chatrapati, Lalshankar Umiyashankar, Sulochanaben Desai-Vanita Vishram, Ambalal Sakarlal Desai, Jeevanlal Divan, Chunilal Bhatt, Dahyabhai Ijjatram Mehta and Krupashankar Pandit. The latter part of the Kranti Yatra includes houses of Keshavlal Mehta, Sir Chinubhai Madhavlal, Sheth Ranchodlal Chotalal, Dr Manidhar Vyas, Sir Chimanlal Setalvad, Kumar Karyalay, Navi Gujarati Shala, Narayan Swami-Vaikunthvadi, Bhaishankar Solicitor ni Haveli, Narharibhai Parikh, Jyotisangh associated with Mrudulaben Sarabhai, Surendrarai Medh, Anandshankar Dhruv and another Keshavlal Mehta. “The Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) has been asked to work out various aspects to promote and propagate these circuits. Ahmedabad’s tourism plan identifies five other circuits, offering visitors distinct heritage, religious, museum and contemporary experiences. The two Heritage Circuits cover Sarkhej Roza, Bhadra Fort, Sidi Saiyed Mosque, Manek Chowk, historic vavs and the Ahmedabad Heritage Walk. The Religious Circuit links major temples, including Camp Hanuman Mandir, Swaminarayan Temple, Jagannath and ISKCON. The Museum Circuit connects Veechar, Calico Textile, Lalbhai Dalpatbhai, Sanskar Kendra and Vintage Car Museum. The Modern Architecture Circuit features ATMA House, Atal Bridge, riverfront attractions, Science City, Amdavad ni Gufa and B V Doshi’s Sangath. Download the TOI App.
