Ahmedabad: In a move aimed at resolving long-standing drainage choking, backflow and leakage problems in eastern Ahmedabad, the city civic body has connected the existing 600mm diameter rising line of the Jivanwadi drainage pumping station in Thakkarbapanagar to a newly laid trunk main line using micro-tunnelling technology.
Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) said the project would strengthen the drainage network and directly benefit around 2.3 lakh residents across three municipal wards, including Nikol, Gopal Chowk, Thakkarbapanagar and Viratnagar. Currently, the existing 1,600mm diameter drainage trunk main line along the Jashodanagar-Naroda highway is overburdened with sewage from surrounding areas. The project will also facilitate the rehabilitation of the old 1,600mm trunk main line.
The civic body said the use of micro-tunnelling technology would improve the overall capacity and efficiency of the drainage network, addressing complaints that have affected residents of eastern Ahmedabad for years. The connection will allow Jivanwadi pumping station to utilise the higher capacity of the new trunk main line and operate at full capacity, improving the disposal of sewage. It is also expected to reduce pressure on the existing drainage infrastructure and provide relief from recurring pipeline leakages and backflow. With Jivanwadi pumping station’s rising line now connected to the new trunk main, the load on the old network is expected to reduce substantially. Diverting drainage flow to the newly constructed micro-tunnelling line will allow AMC to undertake repairs and rehabilitation of the existing pipeline without disrupting sewage disposal.
