New Delhi: A 31-year-old undertrial was allegedly stabbed to death by two other inmates inside central jail no. 10 in Rohini Monday. Both have been arrested. Police are probing whether a battle for dominance inside the prison led to the killing.
Pradeep’s sister, Nisha , alleged that he was taken to hospital 30 minutes after the attack, and money was demanded to allow the family to see him.
A relative of the victim said he had met Pradeep shortly before the incident and learned about the attack after leaving the premises. “Pradeep was fine when I met him,” he said. “He was killed with a knife. How did it get inside the jail?” she asked, adding that his next court hearing was approaching. The murder was premeditated, she alleged.
The attackers and the victim were lodged in different cells in barrack number 203, and a tussle between them had been going on for a long time, a police officer said.
Seven days ago, there was a scuffle between Pradeep and one of the accused, police said. One of the attackers allegedly has four to five cases registered against him. Jail officials denied all allegations. They also dismissed the family’s claim that Pradeep was lodged in jail in a murder case.
Tihar sources said he was involved in more than 10 cases. Pradeep had been in jail since April 2024 in a robbery case and was booked on the charge of common intention under IPC and under Arms Act.
Doctors at BSA Hospital declared him brought dead, according to information received by Samaypur Badli police. The deceased has been identified as Pradeep alias Mohinder, who was in judicial custody. Senior police officers, along with the station house officer, went to the jail and BSA Hospital. Police collected the medico-legal case report and examined CCTV footage from the jail premises. A case is being registered at Samaypur Badli police station.
