Cops consider adult trial for 3 juveniles — Swaroop Nagar rape-murder

The emergence of CCTV footage has added a fresh dimension to the case

New Delhi: Delhi Police is likely to move Juvenile Justice Board (JJB) seeking permission to try three juveniles as adults in the alleged rape and murder of a girl in outer Delhi’s Swaroop Nagar, citing the gravity and nature of the offence, officials said.

Police said an application may be moved before the board considering the nature and gravity of the offence. The girl was stabbed around eight times,” an officer said. One of the accused has allegedly told police that the girl was putting pressure on him to marry her and that he killed her over the issue. Police said the claim was being verified. The girl had gone to meet a friend, who allegedly called some of his associates, according to police. The accused allegedly told investigators that they had been consuming alcohol. Investigators said the accused allegedly told them they killed her fearing she would report the assault.

“All angles are being explored. Police have also seized a goods-carrying tempo allegedly used in the crime. A ring-like object recovered from the vehicle reportedly helped investigators develop leads that led to the suspects. The group then boarded the tempo, which was being driven by the brother of one of the juveniles. Police alleged that the girl was sexually assaulted inside the vehicle and later stabbed multiple times.

Identifying the victim initially proved difficult, according to investigators. Police are also likely to conduct an ossification test on the victim, as her family has not been able to provide documents establishing her age.
