New Delhi: Police have arrested a 27-year-old man for allegedly creating fake social media accounts in the name of a woman residing in northeast Delhi to harass and defame her. The accounts were being created and operated through a mobile number registered in the name of a 27-year-old man from New Ashok Nagar,” said a senior police officer. During interrogation, it emerged that the accused was known to the woman and had been following her since 2022.

The woman had reported that she was being harassed and mentally tortured through social media by an unknown person who repeatedly created fake accounts using her name and photographs and sent obscene videos and images to her husband and acquaintances, according to police. Whenever the fake accounts were reported to the platform and taken down, the accused allegedly created new accounts and repeated the same activity, causing continued mental harassment and distress to the woman, police said. A case was registered under the IT Act at the cyber police station of northeast district before a team was formed to investigate the case. “The details of the suspected accounts were obtained from the platform. Acting on technical leads, police apprehended the accused. A mobile phone allegedly used in the commission of the offence was seized.
