Kolkata: A Diamond Harbour court on Monday sentenced Ajgar Laskar, Ajahar Laskar and Rabiul Sardar to life imprisonment for murdering and beheading Habibullah Paik in South 24 Parganas four years ago over his extramarital affair with Ajgar’s wife. Fast Track Court-III convicted the three under IPC Sections 302 and 34 after 24 witnesses testified. Mathurapur police had found Paik’s headless body at Subudhipur on Feb 9, 2022, and his head in a nearby pond.

Fingerprint evidence linked one of the convicts to the weapon,” special public prosecutor Bivas Chatterjee said, adding that a voice recording on Paik’s phone, recovered from one of the convicts, indicated the affair. “DNA examination helped confirm the identity of the deceased, while the autopsy report supported the prosecution’s case. Gait analysis, a cycle-van puller’s testimony, call records, Paik’s last call to his wife, WBSEDCL records and state forensic soil reports helped establish the case. Download the TOI App.
