Kolkata: Bengal Police’s Special Task Force (STF) on Wednesday reported two drug seizures worth Rs 1.2 crore and secured a 20-year rigorous imprisonment sentence for two cannabis traffickers in a separate case.
The operations came a day after a first court of the Additional District and Sessions Judge in Krishnanagar sentenced Alam Mondal and Alamin Mondal to 20 years’ rigorous imprisonment and fined them Rs 2 lakh each. The conviction followed the seizure of 447.2kg of ganja from a 12-wheeler truck in Nabadwip on Feb 11, 2024. Non-payment of the fine will invite an additional six months’ rigorous imprisonment and Rs 1 lakh penalty.

The STF’s Malda unit, with local police, intercepted Sourav Kumar and Lalita Devi, both from Bihar’s Bhagalpur district in Farakka Police Station area and seized 400g of brown sugar. In a separate operation, the STF’s Murshidabad unit detained Yousuf Ali of Murshidabad and Sarikul Islam of Malda after recovering 750g of Yaba (methamphetamine) tablets.
