Kolkata: Vedanta group chairperson Anil Agarwal said Tata group: The wider industry impact

Vedanta chairperson Anil Agarwal met CM Suvendu Adhikari in Kolkata on Wednesday

Kolkata: Vedanta group chairperson Anil Agarwal said Tata group companies were doing well in spite of problems in the holding company. “If you see it that way, all operating companies are okay,” Agarwal said. “In emerging markets, the face of the promoter is important,” he said, adding that businesses in developing economies differ from those in developed markets, where ownership and management are often more distinctly separated. He said a large part of India’s corporate landscape had evolved around individual entrepreneurs and family-owned businesses, with founders playing a direct role in building enterprises and earning investors’ confidence. “In developed markets like England, Europe and America, shareholders and management are two different entities,” he said.

Agarwal added, however, that promoters remain central to businesses in emerging markets such as India, where investors often repose faith in the individuals who build and lead companies. He emphasised the need for a gradual shift towards professional management as conglomerates expand. The Vedanta chairperson was in Kolkata on Wednesday, where he met CM Suvendu Adhikari.

Commenting on the financials of Vedanta, Agarwal said it now has a combined revenue of $30 billion and in three years is likely to achieve $50 billion. 70% of his businesses are in India and the remaining outside, according to him.
