Assistant Conservator of Forests Satish Pujar said balancing conservation with the realities of human settlement will be crucial in the coming decades. Ramappa Birannavar, whose land borders the reserve, said blackbucks are an integral part of Ranebennur’s identity but acknowledged that crop losses caused by roaming herds can be substantial. The sanctuary’s golden jubilee coincides with a growing public focus on the reserve. He noted that scientific grassland management, regulation of human activity and protection of natural ecosystems are essential for the survival of grassland-dependent species. Farmers living near the sanctuary say the animals are both a source of pride and concern. He expressed hope that tourism initiatives and future management measures would help address the issue and provide support to affected farmers.
