Kochi : Ernakulam Vikasana Samithi, an NGO, has come up with severe criticism of the manner in which the renovation of Mullassery canal was done. The Samithi alleged that the contractor failed to conduct the renovation properly and hence several places in the city are under the threat of waterlogging.
Kumar said the contractor who renovated Mullassery canal near T D Road had dumped a broken slab inside the canal and then covered it with three concrete slabs. Samithi president K S Dileep Kumar has lodged a complaint with the executive engineer of the irrigation department seeking action in this regard. Following complaints regarding water shortage, the KWA conducted an inspection of the water supply lines passing through Mullassery canal. It was a pipe burst on T D Road near the canal that caused a water shortage. In order to repair the pipe, covering slabs of the canal were removed. Mullassery Canal carries rainwater from several parts of the city to the backwaters. The old slabs dumped in the canal are blocking the flow of water, which could lead to waterlogging in the city.
