Kumara said 318 Pourakarmikas are serving under the Mandya city municipal council and directed officials to ensure eligible workers benefit from various welfare schemes. Under the Gruha Bhagya scheme, 28 workers have received benefits, and officials are taking steps to extend the benefit to 16 more. Eligible workers in distress are also receiving a monthly hardship allowance of Rs 2,000, he said.

Mandya: Deputy commissioner Kumara, Wednesday, said the priority must be the health, safety, and family welfare of Pourakarmikas, whose services are vital to maintaining cleanliness and protecting public health, at the inauguration of Pourakarmika Day celebrations. He said parents’ dedication and hard work should inspire children to aim for responsible positions in society. Calling for better health protection, Kumara directed municipal authorities to conduct monthly health check-ups and ensure immediate treatment for workers diagnosed with illnesses. He urged Pourakarmikas to make use of govt healthcare and insurance schemes and stressed the importance of using protective equipment such as gloves, masks and safety boots while on duty. He also directed officials to ensure adequate facilities, including restrooms, drinking water, and toilets, as well as Provident Fund benefits and active insurance coverage. Kumara urged Pourakarmikas to give special attention to their children’s education and create a supportive home environment that encourages them to pursue higher education and career goals.
