The incident occurred at around 1.00pm in the Siddeshwar Park area of Vidyanagar. Udayakar had previously been accused in the 2015 murder of a man named Maruti, according to police. He was acquitted in the case in 2017.

Hubballi-Dharwad Police Commissioner N Shashikumar said two people were allegedly involved in the attack. His rowdy sheet was closed around four years ago, police sources said.

Police are now investigating whether the murder was linked to the earlier case or whether another dispute was behind the attack. The victim was identified as Dadapeer Udayakar (33) a resident of Nekar Nagar in Hubballi. A video of the attack circulating on social media shows a man lying on the road while two people allegedly assault him with sharp weapons. Udayakar had been living with his wife and children in Bogenagarakoppa in Kalghatgi taluk and had been working in agriculture for the past eight years.
