A woman lost gold ornaments worth around Rs 5.5 lakh after thieves allegedly targeted

Belagavi : A woman lost gold ornaments worth around Rs 5.5 lakh after thieves allegedly targeted her at the Bailhongal bus stand on Thursday. Taking advantage of the rush, the thieves allegedly snatched gold ornaments weighing about 35 grams from her neck and escaped unnoticed. Police checked the bags of nearly 80 passengers on the bus but found no clue about the suspects.

Soon after the incident was reported, Bailhongal police rushed to the spot and began inquiries.

The bus was crowded when Mangala boarded it, according to police. Bailhongal police said efforts are on to trace the accused and recover the stolen ornaments. The incident occurred when she was boarding a bus with family members to visit the Chamundeshwari temple at Marakumbi village. The woman broke down after discovering that her jewellery had been stolen. The bus from which the ornaments were stolen was taken to the police station for inspection, and passengers were questioned. Investigators also examined CCTV footage from the bus stand and tracked the movements of suspected persons in an effort to identify the culprits. The incident created anxiety among commuters at the bus station for some time.

Police have registered a case and launched an investigation. The victim, Mangala Desai from Nanagundikoppa village in Bailhongal taluk, realised the theft only after the accused had fled with the ornaments.
