Belagavi : A proposal to divert surplus water from the Tilari Hydroelectric Project to the Rakaskop Reservoir through the Markandeya River was discussed at a meeting held at the deputy commissioner’s office on Tuesday.
If implemented, the project is expected to benefit farmers in eight villages of Chandgad taluk and around 20–22 villages in Belagavi taluk. Under the proposal, surplus water from three proposed dams in the Tilari project area—Devnala, Bhandoran Nala and Paniparmar Nala—would be diverted to the Rakaskop Reservoir instead of being released into the Konkan region after power generation. They said the govts of Maharashtra and Karnataka had expressed support for the proposal. Shivaji Sunthkar said diverting Tilari’s surplus water to Rakaskop would strengthen Belagavi city’s drinking water supply and benefit agriculture in surrounding rural areas. He said the proposal had earlier been pursued by late leader Narsingrao Patil and former MP Suresh Angadi.
DC Mohammad Roshan, former Chandgad MLA Rajesh Patil, former Belagavi mayor Shivaji Sunthkar and office-bearers of the Former Corporators’ Association attended the meeting. Roshan assured the participants that the proposal would be examined in detail. Rajesh Patil urged both states to take up the project as a joint initiative, saying the diversion of Tilari water could significantly improve agricultural productivity in the border region.
