Udupi: Udupi Town police arrested two men for allegedly producing a fake Aadhaar card before a court to impersonate another person and stand as a surety for an accused seeking bail.
Based on the complaint, Udupi Town police registered a case under Sections 319(2), 336(3), 318(4), 229(1) and 340(2) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, along with the relevant provisions of the Aadhaar-related law. The team was led by PSI (Investigation-2) Ratnakar K.
Police said Farooq allegedly impersonated another individual and produced the forged Aadhaar card before the court with the intention of deceiving the court and securing bail for Noman. The act allegedly amounted to cheating the court as well as the individuals whose identities and genuine documents were misused. Following directions from senior officers, a special team was formed under the guidance of Udupi Town police inspector Mahesh Prasad P.
The accused, Umar Farooq of Bantwal and Nishanth Kumar of Mangaluru were arrested by Udupi Town police and produced before the court. They have been remanded in judicial custody, SP Hariram Shankar said on Thursday.
The case came to light after Abbas, administrative officer of the Udupi district and sessions court, filed a complaint on Aug 13.
Proceedings were under way in connection with a case before the Udupi district and sessions court, according to the complaint. During the bail proceedings of an accused identified as Noman, one of the accused, Farooq, allegedly used the Aadhaar number belonging to Prashanth, but created a forged Aadhaar card carrying the name and address of KT Mohammed.
