Meerut: Tension was palpable on Chaudhary Charan Singh University (CCSU) campus on Monday as students launched a sit-in protest demanding the immediate restoration of student union elections, which have remained suspended on campus since 2017. The campus looked like a fortress as a heavy police force was deployed to maintain order and prevent any untoward incidents.
Amid widespread slogan-shouting and police presence, university officials intervened and assured agitators that a student delegation would meet with the vice-chancellor on Oct 29 to discuss their demands. Student polls were either suspended or restricted in UP due to govt policies, university administrations’ decisions, law and order issues and academic schedule disruptions. Bhadana said, “Student union elections must be conducted. Student leaders, including Shubham Badhana and Alok Baisla, submitted a formal memorandum to university authorities outlining a detailed charter of demands. Protests will continue if CCSU fails to comply. ” Beyond the demand for campus polls, agitators pressed for several key infrastructure and policy changes. They urged the immediate construction of new hostels for male and female students, citing safety and accommodation concerns for those coming from distant areas, particularly women. Protesters also raised financial and academic grievances, demanding withdrawal of a recent fee hike across courses—which they argued places an unfair burden on poor and middle-class families—and asked for a return to the old fee structure. They further urged an end to the political use of university venues, including the main auditorium, Brihaspati Bhawan and Atal Sabhagar, maintaining that these spaces should be reserved exclusively for academic, cultural and student activities. The protest at Meerut university comes even as students at Aligarh Muslim University and Jamia Millia Islamia are protesting, demanding the restoration of union polls. Download the TOI App.
